3. Must provide a html element to use as the drop target
4. How should it look like?

as far as I remember file and folder drop is likely the same API-wise

it's only for the "button that triggers the browser's native picker dialog" that there is a strict difference

No, there is no official API for dropping folder.
Webkit supports some badly designed custom methods. Firefox does not.

There are workarounds, like using an input in the element.
